Originally conceived as the score for the film Fire Underground by Nick Crockett, this music has accumulated additional meanings for me as climate change and Covid-19 escalate. Nick describes Fire Underground as "a speculative fantasy which re-imagines and reinterprets the history of coal mining in the eastern United States...The project features a paleozoic coal forest deep underground, which is slowly returning to life. The forest is a kind of purgatory, but also a repository of the myths and dreams of the people living above...I’ve tried to render the past as a space for possibility, for transformation, and for a kind of communion. It is filled with danger, but also with openings and with light."

Today, with so many in isolation and gripped with worry, I offer it as a balm: a re-connection to earth in the past, present and future.
